Last updated: 2026-03-06

Quick decision (TL;DR)

  • Call 119 now if it may be life-threatening (trouble breathing, severe chest pain, unconsciousness, heavy bleeding, etc.).
  • Call #7119 (if available) if you’re worried but unsure whether you need an ambulance.
  • Call #8000 for pediatric telephone advice when a child becomes sick at night/holidays (hours vary by area).
  • If you are a visitor and need help in English, see Japan Visitor Hotline (JNTO).

Call 119 immediately if you notice any of these “red flags”

  • Trouble breathing / blue lips
  • Severe chest pain
  • Unconsciousness / severe confusion
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty)
  • Seizure that won’t stop

(This site provides general guidance, not medical diagnosis. If you think it’s an emergency, call 119.)
